We all found ourselves in public place, such as class or meeting, with a feeling of an intense sneeze coming on. The worst thing you can do in such situation is to ‘keep it for yourself’. Suppressing your sneeze could affect badly your health.

How, you may ask?

Sneeze travels at over 100 MPH. Imagine what happens in your head when you try to stop it. Pressure and mucus of sneeze could seriously damage tender and delicate parts of your head.

By suppressing sneeze you could damage your hearing, even burst your eardrums. Suppressed sneeze can tear blood vessels and muscles within the head and cause sinus hemorrhage.

There are even worse damages. Tongues were bitten and even severed due to suppressed sneeze. You know how much bacteria is in the mouth? Nice environment for various infections. Also, your upper and lower jaw can snap shut in the process resulting in broken teeth.

So, when you try to suppress your sneeze next time just to be polite in front of others, think twice. I say let it go, no matter how loud it is.

I promised I’ll post some results for stretching exercise for my Plantar Fasciitis. Anyway, my feet are better now, but I have an impression not because of exercise. I used towel, right posture, everything, but it seems that other things helped.

I was applying some Voltaren, which is great non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, to the painful spot and I was using cold beer can, rolling it with my feet.

Somehow, I felt more relief after these, than the stretching exercise. Anyway, you should try all methods that could help you relieve pain caused by Plantar Fasciitis.

I’m going to nice little walk right now.

Plantar Fasciitis is really awful and painful condition. For those who don’t know, it an inflammation of plantar fascia, a thick connective tissue that supports the arch of the foot. Anyway, I have it from time to time and it’s really annoying. My heel is as hard as a shoe’s. It’s painful, it itches, burns,…
Possible cause could be the winter shoes I wear, or long standing and walking.

Anyway, I found a stretching exercise which is apparently helpful. I’ll try it right away.

Here’s what I should do:

While sitting I will place palm over the toes and ball of foot

I’ll pull the foot towards me, stretching the bottom of the foot

I’ll hold the foot for 30 to 60 seconds and then release

I will repeat the exercise 5 times per session (3 sessions per day)

I also found alternative way with a towel, which I should loop around the ball of the foot and use it to pull and stretch the foot.

I’ll post the results.

Most popular drinks are soda based. Although being refreshing, soda drinks may damage your body. And here’s how.

Obesity – Sugar you take with soda drinks is being translated into fat in liver. So if you drink just one can daily, you may gain a pound of weight gain every month. Plus, artificial sweeteners in soda induce physiologic and hormonal responses that make you gain weight.

Teeth damage – Soda dissolves tooth enamel with high levels of acidity, which makes it one of the main causes of tooth decay, even worse than sugar in candies.

Liver damage – Liver is working overtime to refine all sugar from soda. Also, too many soda drinks could cause liver cirrhosis.

Kidney damage – Soda drinks are known for their high phosphoric acid content that could promote kidney stone formation.

Diabetes – Drinking soda stresses your body’s ability to process sugar. Add weight gain and chances of developing diabetes are increased.

Heartburn – Soda beverages are very acidic. They also deliver a lot of air in the form of carbon dioxide, which can cause stomach problems and heartburn.

I don’t know about you, but I’m spending almost whole day in front of computer. I’ve read today about the eye strain and how dangerous it could be, leading to glaucoma.

So I get few (5 to be precise) exercises that might be helpful to your (and mine) eyes.

First exercise – Relax and cover your eyes with your palms. Don’t touch the eyeballs. Stare into darkness for 30 seconds. Repeat few times.

Second exercise – Look up, down, left and right for 5 seconds, repeating each step 5 times.

Third exercise – Close your eyes as tightly as you can, hold so for 5 second and then release. Open your eyes as widely as you can, hold for 5 seconds and relax. Repeat 5 times.

Fourth exercise – Rotate your eyeballs 5 times in both directions. Make 5 repetitions of this exercise.

Fifth exercise – Try to focus on things near you and then far from you. Hold your thumb six inches from your nose and focus on it. Take deep breath and exhale slowly, then focus on an object about 10 feet away. Take another deep breath and slowly exhale. Repeat about 15 times.

Our brain is ‘needy’ when it comes to food and it has special requirements regarding diet. Here are few tips how to keep your brain in shape with proper nutrition.

First advice – Never skip your breakfast. Brain needs its supply of glucose, and breakfast is the best way to start the day. Skipping it reduces your daily performance (at work or school). But its’ not all about sugar. Your breakfast should be balanced with proteins and Vitamin B.

Eggs are great solution because they are rich in choline, which your body uses to produce the neurotransmitter acetylcholine.

Eat salad in every occasion, because of antioxidants, including beta-carotene and vitamins C and E, it contains.

Yogurt should be important part of your diet, because it contains the amino acid tyrosine, needed for the production of the neurotransmitters dopamine and noradrenalin, important for brain function.

As you shouldn’t skip your breakfast, you also shouldn’t skip your afternoon snack, but avoid junk food rich in trans-fatty acids, which will slow your brain and performance.

Since brain is 60% fat, you should ‘oil’ it. Since trans fats are bad solution, you should take omega-3 fatty acids. Fish is the richest source and certainly the best brain food.

Finish your day with oatmeal with strawberries and blueberries in it. These fruits improve coordination, concentration and short-term memory, according to the studies.

Good news for all beer lovers. According to the new study written in the Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture, beers that contain plenty of hops or pale barley malts could be good for bones thanks to the dietary silicon they contain.

Previous studies have shown that beer is an important source of dietary silicon, but this was the first research to find out which beers to contain the most silicon.

Dietary silicon is found in a lot of foods, mostly fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, which could be an explanation why beer is so rich in this useful ingredient.

Great excuse to have a pint or two – to get some minerals, vitamins and silicone.

One of the most underestimated weapons for fighting stress is something we do automatically every day – breathing. What is more important is that breathing exercises are fast, simple, absolutely free, and can be performed anywhere.

Here’s what you should do:

Relax. You may sit or stand.

Inhale slowly through your nose, counting to 5.

Let the air out from your mouth, counting to 8.

Repeat several times.

Tip: As you breathe, let your abdomen expand outward. Don’t raise your shoulders. This is more relaxed and natural way to breathe, which helps your lungs fill with more fresh air.

Another effective breathing technique is simultaneous breathing through both of your nostrils.

Inhale slowly through your left nostril, while you keep your right nostril closed with your index finger.

Close your left nostril with your left index finger and exhale slowly through your right nostril.

Inhale through right nostril while left is still closed.

Close right nostril and exhale through your left nostril.

Repeat few times.

Those were simple techniques that could help you fight stress anytime, using only your breathing.

Food poisoning results from eating food contaminated with bacteria toxins or other pathogens, such as parasites or viruses. Food poisoning symptoms range from stomach problems to more serious symptoms, including diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, fever and dehydration, but it could also be extremely dangerous, resulting in death, if poisoned person doesn’t receive treatment.

Harmful bacteria are the most common causes of food poisoning. They could contaminate fresh food, including meat, fish and even vegetables. However, viruses and parasites could cause so called foodborne illness as well.

Here are some examples where you should look at and what symptoms you might expect if poisoned with food.

Raw and undercooked meat and poultry usually can be contaminated with following bacteria: Campylobacter jejuni, E. coli, L. monocytogenes and Salmonella. Following symptoms will occur if person is poisoned: abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.

Raw and unpasteurized milk and dairy products, such as soft cheeses, could be equally bad containing L. monocytogenes, Salmonella, Shigella, Staphylococcus aureus and C. jejuni. Symptoms are similar, nausea and vomiting, fever, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea.

Undercooked and especially raw eggs that are used for some foods and salad dressings such as hollandaise sauce, caesar salad, tiramisu, homemade ice cream, mayonnaise, etc. Raw eggs are biggest source of Salmonella enteriditis which could cause very serious health problems including nausea and vomiting, fever, abdominal cramps, and diarrhea.

You all heard about raw or undercooked shellfish and how bad it can be. It could be contaminated with very dangerous bacteria Vibrio vulnificus and Vibrio parahaemolyticus that could cause chills, fever, and collapse.

Improperly canned foods, as well as smoked or salted fish could be source of botulism, very dangerous disease, caused by bacteria C. botulinum. Usual symptoms of poisoning are double vision, inability to swallow, difficulty speaking, and inability to breathe. Botulism is very dangerous, so you should seek medical help right away.

Any fresh or minimally processed food could contain E. coli, L. monocytogenes, Salmonella, Shigella, Yersinia enterocolitica, or viruses and parasites that cause food poisoning followed by diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.

Be very carefully how you prepare your food and where you eat.

It’s Saturday tomorrow and I’m planning a barbecue with my friends. For the first time, I’ll have a sort of indoor barbecue to protect us from eventual snowfall.

Anyway, we plan to put some nice ribs, sausages and steaks with some potato. I’ll be in charge for nice marinade (I’ll reveal you few recipes next time ) and others are in charge for meat preparation and for the fire.

My good friend is a cook and he shared few important tips when choosing good meat for BBQ.

First, meat for barbecue must be fresh and never frozen. The easiest way to check if meat is fresh is by its color, which should be slight brightly colored. You should avoid extra juice in meat package.

Second, good barbecue meat must have a layer of fat on it, because it will help the meat stay tender. If you don’t like fat on your meat, be sure to remove it before grilling, not after.

Third, even thickness of barbecue meat is the key for avoiding meat being overcooked or left raw.

The best parts of BBQ meat are the most tender portions, such as rib eye, tenderloin or strip steaks. Avoid skirt steaks or flank steaks, because they have less fat. If you grill them, don’t let them being overcooked.

Finally, storing your barbecue meat in the fridge for a couple of days will make it more tender after it’s cooked.
